Dear CES Families,
Our students have been extremely busy with their endeavours over the past week. The Emerson Jazz Band received a #1 rating to move on to the State Festival on March 23 in Westbook. All the soloists also received top marks as well. Our Math Counts Team placed 1st overall at their competition and are headed to the state competition later this month. Yash Nair and Taki Ishimura placed 1st and 2nd individually. Students involved in swimming and wrestling were busy and the Girl's Junior Olympic Volleyball placed 1st in their tournament. We have 8 middle school girls on the team. What a talented group of students we have at C-E.
Students in grades 4 and 8 were once again selected to take part in the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as "the nation's report card." The testers from the U.S. Department of Education spoke highly of our students focus, thoughtfulness and respect they displayed as they took this 90 min. assessment. Kudos to all of them!
Our 3rd and 4th grades accepted new classmates this week. Salmon eggs were delivered to the 4th grade classroom. Students will collect data on the salmon's development and when they are old enough, release them to the wild later this spring.
Over the past 5 days, students have participated in "Be Yourself Week" here at school where each day they have shared a bit about themselves with their peers. All this will culminate in a presentation to the middle school by Brandon Baldwin from the Office of the Attorney General, who will speak to students about the importance of individuality in our society. This presentation will encourage students not just to be themselves, but to respect individuality in others.
Trimester 2 ends next Friday the 15th, and report cards will be mailed home on Tuesday the 26th. Those of you with middle school students, please touch base with them to make sure they are all caught up on their work. Student Led Conferences will follow on the 28th and 29th.
Don't forget to SPRING ahead this Saturday evening. Good thing students will have an extra day to absorb the lost hour.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
The Scholastic Book Fair will be held on March 28th from 2:00-7:00 in the Emerson Cafeteria during Parent Conferences. Volunteers are needed from 1:30-7:30 to cover one hour shifts. lf you can help out, please Contact Suzie Maristany at 288-9248 or email her at email@example.com.
MARCH ON MOUNT DESERT STREET
Join us for the March on Mount Desert Street, an annual community progressive dinner, on Tuesday, March 12. Take a stroll along Mount Desert Street, enjoy dinner and entertainment at stops along the way, and have fun with your neighbors! This event is free and open to all. It starts with a play with Conners/Emerson students performing at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church from 5:15-5:30 P.M. Appetizers will be served at the Abbe Museum from 5:30-6:00, followed by salad at the YWCA from 6:00-6:30. The Jesup Memorial Library serves soup and bread, including gluten free offerings, from 6:30-7:00. The evening finishes up with dessert at the St. Saviour's Episcopal Church from 7:00-7:30 PM.
SCIENCE FAIR RESCHEDULED
The PTSA Science Fair for grades K-4 has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 3 from 6-7 PM in the Emerson Cafeteria. A PTSA representative has visited the Conners classrooms this week showing off exciting experiments!
Kindergarten registration will be held on March 13th and 14th for parents to either drop off or complete registration paperwork for Kindergarten Screening in April. You do not have to make an appointment and can come in anytime between 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM. When we receive all of the paperwork, we will then have you sign up for a date to bring your child to Kindergarten Screening. Please follow this link to download the paperwork:
The big 8th Grade Silent Auction and Bingo Extravaganza is this Sunday, March 10 at Reel Pizza. Doors open at 1:30 PM. There will be a movie at 2:00 PM. Admission to the movie Ice Age: Continental Drift is $5.00, but the rest of the event is free. The winner of the Ipad raffle will be announced at 3:30 PM, and silent auction items will be available at 3:45 PM. The Antique Pickled Furniture Robotics Team from our school is preparing diligently to compete at the Lego League North American Open Championship in San Diego in May this year. They will be competing with other teams from all over North America. Team members have been meeting 6-7 days a week since September last year to prepare for the various competitions. They are also working hard to raise funds for the San Diego championship. Please consider making a contribution towards their fundraising efforts during the Hats and Jeans Day on March 15th. Help them make Conners Emerson School proud!!!
The Conners-Emerson Jazz Band received a "1” rating after playing three great selections. We had 14 soloists who also received "1" ratings for their performances. Mr. Wainer and the students have worked very hard and are looking forward to the State Jazz Festival on the 23rd in Westbrook, Maine. Congratulations to students who played on the Junior Olympics Volleyball team for taking first place in the New England Tournament in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
Congratulations also go to the Math Counts group who placed first at the chapter level competition in Hampden coached by Ms. Winne and Mrs. Burgess. The group will now go onto States, including Yash and Taki who placed first and second at the competition.
The Hancock wresting team also did well! Our students continue to do great things!
There will be an annual Indoor Regatta on Friday, March 15th at 6:00 P.M. at the MDI YMCA swimming pool. This is a free community event and is sponsored by the MDI Community Sailing Center and the Bar Harbor Yacht Club. The Wind Wizards are working hard to develop a new combination of industrial fans to blow us off the water this year! All ages are welcome and everyone will get a chance to steer a remote controlled boat.
