CONNERS EMERSON SCHOOL

Dear CES Families - 

It was great to see so many families at school over the last 24 hours.  I had the pleasure of being in the room for some of the student led conferences and it was great to hear kids sharing what they know and seeing parents listening intently.  I am very happy that we have this opportunity each year for students and parents to get together and talk about their learning. It’s something special.


Today the folks from the Hancock County food drive came to collect the 21 boxes of food we gathered here at Conners Emerson. They were very impressed!  Thank you all for helping those who are in need and a special thanks to Mrs. Dyer's kindergarten class under the direction of their student teacher, Ms. Graves, for helping promote and organize this food drive.

Finally, If you'd really like to hear some "local" music come to the Jamin' Toast fundraiser for the 8th grade tomorrow night. For some reason Mr. Boardman and I will be playing a few songs to start off the night. We hope we don't scare people off before the real musicians play!

MUSICAL NOTES

A Note from Mr. Wainer:

The Conners Emerson Jazz Band placed 3rd out of 9 bands at the State Jazz Fest. Our 14 soloists recieved a 1 rating and a certificate of achievement. Josh Bloom/trumpet, Grace Higgins/flute, Annie Painter/alto sax, Matt Cox/alto sax, Branden Dagenais/alto sax, Ben Hagle/trumpet, Ben Watson/guitar, Sean LIn/tenor sax, Nick Ressel/trumpet, Jake Ressel/guitar, Simon Robertson/Bass guitar, Avery LaValle/bass guitar, Gus Reeves/ drumset, Yash Nair/ violin. Yash Nair also received a musicianship award for special recognition of his solo. We played Groovin' High by Dizzy Gillespie, Well You Needn't by Thelonious Monk, and Border Crossing by Tim Fisher.

Some of the judges comments were as follows: "It's nice to see so many students involved," " Keep doing what your doing,"  " Nicely developed solos," "Great band," "The rhythm section swings!"

I am very proud of these students. They are very dedicated and have an outstanding attitude. It has been a fun year for all of us!

The State Show Choir Competition (aka MMEA State Vocal Jazz Festival) is Friday, April 5 at Ellsworth High School. The Conners Emerson Show Choir will perform in the Ellsworth HS gym (not auditorium) at 1:30. Please attend and cheer loudly for our Show Stoppers! There is no school for students that day so will be looking for you in the audience!

PTSA NEWS

The Science Fair will be next Wednesday, April 3, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria.   Even if you’re not presenting a project, please come out and support the other students and experiment by making your own ice cream.  Project forms must be submitted to Sheila by Monday, April 1st to participate in the Science Fair.  Contact Kristi Losquadro at 288-2882 if you need a form or more information.

Breakfast

There will be an Easter Bunny Pancake Breakfast held at the Somesville Fire Station this Saturday, March 30th from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM. The cost is $7.00 per person or $20.00 per family for an all you can eat breakfast of pancakes, sausage, muffins and drinks. There will be gluten free options available also. There will be crafts for the children as well as a visit from the Eater Bunny-bring your cameras! All proceeds will benefit the Mount Desert Nursery School and Childcare Center.


Kids Can Grow! – an experiential youth gardening program of the University of Maine Cooperative 

Extension will be offered this May through September at Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s Babson Creek Preserve site in Somesville. 

The program is designed for up to 16 children ages 7-12 and offers monthly hands on gardening classes for the whole group as well as materials and help for each participant to build their own 3 by 5 foot raised bed, including wood, loam, compost, seeds, and plants. Master Gardener Volunteers will guide each child’s efforts at home. 

Participants will learn about planting, growing, and harvesting their own vegetable, herb, and flowering plants; nutrition and food safety; and teamwork! 

Registration will be on a first come, first served basis with a fee of $25 to the University of Maine and a registration deadline of April 15th. There will be a required parent orientation meeting Monday April 22nd from 5:15-6:15 at the MCHT office in Somesville. Group gardening sessions will be on the second Wednesday of each month from 4:00-6:00 pm. Easter Buffet, Easter Benefit for the Maine Seacoast Mission

The Atlantic Oceanside Hotel has joined forces with the Maine Seacoast Mission to give back to the community.  The Mission’s MDI Campfire Coalition provides heating assistance to Island families and 10% of all proceeds from the Easter Buffet will be donated to the Seacoast Mission. 



The buffet will be on Sunday, March 31, 2013 from 11 am to 3pm in their Event Center. The price of the buffet is $18.99 for adults and $8.99 for children 10 and under. The Atlantic Oceanside Hotel & Event Center is located at 119 Eden Street in Bar Harbor. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 288-5801. The Easter Bunny will be making an appearance and photos with the bunny are encouraged.
